Instagram Academy: Rachel Roberts

Rachel Roberts is a real estate advisor with Engel and Volkers Minneapolis. She has amassed a large following on her Instagram making her the perfect instructor for our Instagram Academy! Her and her business partner, Molly, have made their business page something anyone would want to follow-- not just individuals in the industry.

How do you start to get better at Instagram?

It really helps to start looking at what you’re personally attracted to on other accounts. Do you like to see interior design, bright or darker colors and tones, specific educational topics? Follow people that you admire in your field and even outside of it to get inspiration and ideas for content.

A way to save all of your new found ideas directly on the Instagram app is by utilizing the save function. It looks a lot like the bookmark tab on a web browser. Then you can create albums and organize by topic. Example: home ideas, real estate topics, interior design. Then you can revisit when it’s time to brainstorm content to post.

How much time to spend on Instagram in a day?

Once you get it down and into a routine, it doesn’t take as much time. But when you’re just getting started it can take a couple of hours a day. This time includes content and hashtag research, content creation, and tracking the times of top engagement for your posts.

Most of us are already spending over an hour a day mindlessly scrolling on Instagram. Make sure to use this time to still be looking for ideas and saving them for your albums. Don’t forget to actively engage with the accounts you follow while you’re “mindlessly” scrolling. By engaging regularly, it ensures that these accounts will see your content when you do post.

Posting first thing in the morning and later in the evening will get the most engagement so make sure those are the times you’re on the app as well.

What content was most successful to get leads?

  1. If you already have a personal Instagram that you’re using, talking about your real estate account on your personal account will increase your followers and allow you to reach your sphere in a unique way.

  2. Repost other people’s posts. Law of reciprocity, people like to return the favor and show your stuff as well!

  3. Post actual pictures of yourself! People want to see who they’ll be working with. Don’t be camera shy!

  4. Using your stories to ask questions and polls is what creates the most engagement, according to Rachel.

  5. Make sure to keep your polls and questions very simple so people can easily answer.

  6. Follow up with poll and question answers with a sincere and genuine private message.

  7. People can find you via hashtags so don’t forget to use them!
